Claude Opus 5.5 released, 1M context, adaptive thinking, 40% cheaper
Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 in September 2026 alongside Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1. Opus 5.5 performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work but costs 40% less to run than Opus 5. Ships with a 1M-token context window, up to 128K output tokens, adaptive thinking by default, and a five-level effort setting. This is the model that will drive most Claude-powered agent and analysis workflows through 2027.
For practices using AI in workflow automation (intake, chart summarization, patient education content generation): Opus 5.5 hits the sweet spot of quality + cost. Most existing Sonnet 4 workflows can migrate to Opus 5.5 and get better output at similar cost. The 1M context window is meaningful for reading full patient intake documents or long clinical guidelines in a single prompt. Prompts that assumed shorter context can now include richer background.
