Business Listings
Business listings (also called citations) are entries about your practice on directory websites that include your business name, address, phone number, and website. They power local search visibility and trust signals to Google.
What it is
A business listing is a profile of your practice on a third-party directory, with consistent NAP data (Name, Address, Phone) and ideally a description, hours, photos, and a link back to your site. The most important is the Google Business Profile (GBP); the rest are supporting citations across major directories, industry-specific sites, and local data aggregators.
Why it matters
Google uses citation consistency and volume as a ranking factor for local pack and Map results. Inconsistent or missing listings reduce trust and can dilute your local authority. Listings also drive direct traffic and phone calls from people browsing those directories.
How it improves organic traffic
Strong listings push your business into Google's local 3-pack for high-intent terms (e.g., "drug rehab near me"), generate referral traffic from the directories themselves, and create a web of citations that reinforce your topical and geographic relevance. Healthcare and behavioral health practices especially benefit because patients often cross-check across directories before calling.

Frequently asked questions
How many business listings do I need?
Quality > quantity. For most healthcare practices, the top 20–30 high-authority listings outperform 100+ low-quality ones. Focus on Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, the major data aggregators, and 5–10 industry-specific directories first.
How often should I audit my listings?
Quarterly at minimum. Phone numbers change, addresses move, hours shift, and duplicate listings creep in. Audit tools like Yext, BrightLocal, or Moz Local automate this.
Will paid listing services like Yext rank me?
They speed up distribution consistency, not ranking. You still need on-page SEO, content, reviews, and backlinks to rank. Yext is a convenience layer; it won't substitute for an underlying SEO strategy.
